Mavic 2: Sturdier, More Capable, Foldable Drones

Mavic 2 drones boast many improvements over the original Mavic Pro and Mavic Platinum, many of them subtle but effective.

Start with the aircraft. Both Mavic 2 quadcopters have a sturdier build, noticeable the moment you unfold the arms and click them into place. They are more solidly built than the arms on earlier Mavic drones. The newest Mavics remain ultra-portable, with arms that fold against the body and propellers that fold against the arms.

The gimbal hangs from the nose of the aircraft as before, but it doesn’t extend as far below the body. That affords the gimbal and camera more protection on landing and during mishaps. The gimbal cover is one piece and easily removed/replaced.

Sensors are on every surface, not just some, to enable Omni-directional Obstacle Avoidance. (More on that below.) You’ll also find bright built-in LED lights on the bottom surface, which help fly and land in low-light situations, including indoors.

The motors are more powerful than on the original Mavic Pro, and the propellers are quieter than even the props designed for the Mavic Platinum.

The remote controller also folds, so it’s easy to carry in a pocket or purse. The joysticks unscrew for extra portability.

Hasselblad Camera

Your Mavic 2 Pro doesn’t have the technology needed to fly to the moon. But it’s equipped with a new camera from Hasselblad, the Swiss firm whose renowned precision cameras captured images of the moon landings. Trust in this: Your Mavic 2 Pro images will be out of this world.

Shoot in fully automatic mode or rely on an adjustable aperture, from f2.8 to f11.

Stills: The Hasselblad L1D-20c camera and a big 1-inch CMOS sensor on the Mavic 2 Pro combine to capture images with quality never before possible on a Mavic series quadcopter. Contrasts are better defined, and colors are richer. Still photos are recorded at 20MP. The 1-inch sensor has a million effective pixels, more than double the pixels on a Mavic Pro. Shoot in 3- or 5-shot-per-second bursts.

If you can’t decide between JPEG and RAW, save images in both formats simultaneously on a microSD card and achieve the results you desire in the editing room. Mavic 2 has 8GB of internal memory and accepts a card with up to 128GB of storage. High Digital Range (HDR) ensures richer photos with greater contrast. The Hasselblad

Video: In addition to shooting 4K video, 2.7K video or FHD, the Hasselblad has 10-bit Dlog-M color for a higher dynamic range that results in more flexibility in grading. Play back your video on a 4K TV with HLG and grading isn’t even needed to experience the wider color range. See greater contrast along with more vivid colors and more natural tones—immediately. Dlog-M has billion-color capability.

What’s in the box? Mavic 2 Pro foldable quadcopter, foldable remote controller, pair of spare controller sticks, Intelligent Flight Battery, charger, power able, 3 pairs of low-noise propellers, RC cable with Lightning connector, RC cable with standard micro USB connector, RC cable with USB Type-C connector, USB Type-3 communication cable, USB adaptor, large RC cable slider, small RC cable slider.  DJI Goggles RE Edition as well.

Is the DJI Mavic 2 Pro heavier than the Mavic Pro? Yes, but not by much, considering its advantages. It weighs 1.99 pounds, compared with 1.62 pounds for the older Mavic Pro.

How does Mavic 2 range compare with that of the Mavic Pro? At roughly 5 miles, Mavic 2 Pro range is about 16 percent longer.

Is live video streamed in high definition? Yes, 1080p over the full 5-mile range.

What is the maximum flight time in real-world use? The DJI Mavic 2 Pro can fly up to 31 minutes at a constant 15 mph on a still day. In normal flight, with wind, hovering and faster speeds, it is likely to be in the mid-20-minute range.

What is the maximum hover time of the Mavic 2 Pro? 29 minutes without wind.

Can I fly the Mavic 2 Pro in freezing weather? Yes, down to 14 degrees.

Can Mavic 2 fly in rain or snow? No.

Does it take long to unfold the Mavic 2 Pro arms for flight? It takes a few seconds. No tools are needed.

Must I manually unfold the Mavic 2 propellers during flight preparation? No. The Mavic 2 propellers unfold automatically when you power on the four motors.

What is the shutter speed range of the Hasselblad L1D-20c? 8 seconds to 1/8000 second.

Can the Hasselblad be programmed to shoot at intervals? Yes: in JPEG, at 2/3/5/7/10/15/20/30/60 seconds; in RAW, at 5/7/10/15/20/30/60 seconds.

Can the Mavic 2 Pro camera shoot stills in bursts? Yes, in 3- or 5-shot bursts per second.

What is the ISO range? It differs between video and stills, and between automatic and manual: Video, 100-6400; stills, 100-3200 on automatic, and 100-12,800 in manual.

What is the color mode? D-logM (10 bit), support for HDR video (HLG 10bit).

What is the camera’s field of view? The FOV is 77 degrees, or a 28mm equivalent in 35mm format. That’s a slightly narrower view than on most drones.

How big is a still image? 5472×3648.

Is the shutter electronic or mechanical? Electronic.

How does the Mavic 2 Pro CMOS sensor compare to that of the Mavic Pro? The Mavic 2 Pro sensor measures 1 inch, while the Mavic Pro sensor measures 1/2.3 inch. That makes the Mavic 2 Pro sensor more than twice as big.

Does the Mavic 2 Pro lens zoom? No, it is a fixed lens. Closeups can be obtained by using the sensors to fly within 3 feet of a subject. For a Mavic 2 with a zoom lens, consider the Mavic 2 Zoom. The lens on the Mavic 2 Zoom has 2x magnification, with settings of 24mm and 48mm in 35mm equivalent format. It also performs a dolly zoom.

Can I remove the Hasselblad camera to mount on a handheld gimbal? No, the camera and gimbal are affixed to the Mavic 2 Pro.

Can I use DJI Goggles with the Mavic 2 Pro? Yes. The goggles sync wirelessly.

What flight program does the Mavic 2 use? DJI Go 4.

Does DJI Go 4 have photographer aids? More than on any other Mavic drone. In addition to the preprogrammed aids carried over from the Mavic Pro—including Point of Interest, Waypoint 2.0, Asteroid and Boomerang—the Mavic 2 Pro also has Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance, Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems, and  ActiveTrack 2.0 with more precise subject recognition, fast-moving subject tracking, and object trajectory prediction.

How does APAS—Advanced Pilot Assistance System—work? It uses the forward and back sensors to detect objects in the drone’s path, allowing the drone to fly over or around them without stopping for pilot input.

What is the Task Library? Fly a route, record it, then save it. You can go back and trace the exact route, including altitude, speed and angle, at different times to capture the scene under different light.

Can I shoot panoramas with a Mavic 2? Use any of four programs to help: sphere, 180 degrees, horizontal and vertical.

Does Mavic 2 record timelapse? Yes.

What is Hyperlapse? Hyperlapse is a timelapse in which the stills are shot from a moving Mavic 2 and automatically edited together.

What video transmission system is used? OcySync 2.0

What advantages does the H.265/HEVC codec provide? Compared with H.264/AVC, which is available on Mavic 2 and standard on the older Mavic Pro, you’ll store 50 percent more information for fart greater detail.

What smart device operating systems are compatible for displaying the program and live streaming? iOS 10 or later, or Android 5 or later are compatible with Mavic 2.

Does Mavic 2 use satellite positioning? Yes, GPS or GLONASS.

Does Mavic 2 obstacle avoidance work in all directions? Yes, but not in all directions at all times. Front and back work with Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems. Left and right work only while in ActiveTrack and Tripod modes. The Mavic 2 also has sensors top and bottom, with a light to help use the bottom sensor.
